Ethical Fashion, Fair Trade & Ethically Made

Snakeskin, Styled Two Ways

Snakeskin, Styled Two Ways

If you’ve gone clothes shopping lately, you may have noticed a new trend hitting the racks: snakeskin! This animal pattern is popping up everywhere. Unsure about how to wear it? I’ve teamed up with my favorite ethical fashion boutique, The Flourish Market, to show you a couple of different ways to style this versatile pattern! (And I’ve got a coupon link for 15% off your first order at The Flourish Market, too!)

Y’all have been asking me for outfit styling posts for a while now. While I often blog about fashion, I come at the topic from more of a social and environmental justice perspective. I don’t actually consider myself much of a fashion expert! So, I asked Katy, Chief of Style at The Flourish Market, to help show me (and y’all!) different ways to wear one of the latest trends in the fashion world, all while keeping it ethical! (You can read more here about why I choose to purchase ethically made clothing.)

I was pretty excited when I walked into The Flourish Market and saw that Katy had picked out a couple of snakeskin pieces. I have always loved animal prints! Leopard is a particular favorite. I’ve never purchased snakeskin before, but only because it’s never really been an option! I’m excited to wear it now.

And just to be clear: I’m talking about snakeskin-patterned fabric, not actual snakeskin from a live snake. I don’t like to wear actual animals. Don’t worry–no snakes were harmed in the making of these outfits.

First, Katy put me in a classic black/cream snakeskin patterned top. The pattern is bold, but the colors are muted enough to still feel comfortable for my simple, neutral-loving self.

This top, which is available in store at The Flourish Market, is incredibly versatile. You could wear it with basic blue jeans for a more casual look, or pair it with dress pants for a work ensemble. I went middle of the road and paired it with high waisted, white denim from Able. Polished, but not too fancy!

For my second look, we went a little fancier to show you how snakeskin can also be worn for special occasions. The Reilly Maxi is a wrap dress that features beautiful turquoise and blue hues and a more subtle snakeskin pattern.

Paired with my tan heels, I felt wedding guest-ready! This dress would also be cute for functions like baby/wedding showers or even a fancy date. The best part is that this dress is ethically made in the USA, AND The Flourish Market donates 5% of the proceeds to a safe house in Peru from girls who have escaped sex trafficking.

Which look do y’all like best?
