Small Joys: Volume 7

Small Joys | Fairly Southern

The things that have been bringing me joy lately:

1. Simple Truth Sweet Potato Chips. All of my friends and family are probably sick of hearing me talk about how much I love Kroger. But seriously. They have the best prices and a huge selection of organic/gluten-free/natural products. Their Simple Truth line is free from 101 artificial preservatives and ingredients and is often organic as well. I have been buying Simple Truth products for awhile but just recently tried the sweet potato chips. Oh, y’all. So good. Especially paired with pimiento cheese (is that weird?).

Small Joys Volume 3 - Cultivating Gratitude! | Fairly Southern

Spring has sprung, days are sunny, and there’s so much to be grateful for! About time for another Small Joys post, right??

Actually, truth be told, I was struggling with some major discontentment this morning. After wallowing for a bit, I convinced myself that the best way to snap out of it was to cultivate gratitude. So, here I am!

Here are the little things that have been bringing me joy lately:  Read More

Instagram post 17877567547482874 Finished out #NothingNewNovember last night with a little self care (face masking! Can’t really see it because it’s clear!) wearing one of my fave not-new outfits! My slippers win the award for longest-owned item...my college roomie got them for me over 10 years ago! Still the coziest! Comfy top is a @threads4thought purchase from several years ago, and my VS leggings are a consignment purchase from @Poshmark two years ago. Choose clothes that you truly love, and you’ll want to wear them forever! The planet will thank you ☺️🌎
.
Many thanks to everyone who participated in #NothingNewNovember with me and @redressraleigh! I hope this experience has shown you that you likely already have more than you need in your closet, and that it’s really not that hard to shop less. I hope you’ll join me in continuing to be thoughtful about our consumption habits as the holidays and a brand new decade approach!
Instagram post 17861515288594726 So ready for you, Thanksgiving! Got my fall colors and stretchy pants on!
🍁
I’m also ready for a little dose of social justice. If you’re like me, the “Pilgrims and Native Americans were the Bestest of Friends!” narrative you were sold in Kindergarten started to fall a little flat as you learned more over the years about how European colonists committed mass genocide against Indigenous Peoples here in the Americas. On the blog, I’ve got a post up with 6 ways you can honor Native people this Thanksgiving. Please take a read! Link in bio.

Instagram post 17856787237627056 How much food are you wasting each week? Each month? Each year?
🍊
In the U.S., we waste about 30-40% of our food supply each year. Yikes! This is bad for our environment and our wallets and especially tragic considering there are 795 million people in the world who don’t have enough food.
🍊
I’m really excited to have found a free app that helps you reduce personal food waste and find ways to use up those random ingredients you have sitting in your fridge (I’m looking at you, miso!). Read my full review of the Food Companion app over on the blog! Link in profile.
Instagram post 18112113601001292 My new morning affirmation and pick-me-up!
🌅
Anyone else out there constantly on the struggle bus when it comes to waking up? I am naturally a night owl, and a “normal people” schedule of waking up before 8am is basically the bane of my existence. Just waking up and getting out of bed every morning for work is a major struggle, and then I’m the slowest sloth ever as I shower, get dressed, eat breakfast, etc. I feel like I’m moving through molasses!
🌅
Last night after my regular yoga class at @colorsofyogaraleigh, we got a special treat: the amazing Bri of @flyhoneyoils talked to us about the different essential oils she likes to use in her day-to-day and gifted us custom blends to take home! She encouraged us to think of times in our average days when we could really use something soothing or a pick-me-up. I didn’t have to search very far....the very minute my eyes open in the morning is when I first need a little help! 😆
🌅
My custom blend has lots of orange to wake me and lift my mood, a little lavender for calm, and a little frankincense for grounding.
🌅
There were so many things I loved about this experience, including learning about how clean, natural, and sustainable Fly Honey’s blends are, but my favorite part was that Bri encouraged us to write an affirmation to say to ourselves whenever we use our oils. Love that acknowledgement of the mind-body connection!
🌅
I was so excited to use my oil and affirmation this morning when I got up. It made such a difference! I was able to wake up a bit easier, I felt calm and confident, and I actually made it to work on time 🙌🏽🙌🏽
🌅
Cheers to a more positive start to my day and to small business owners like Bri (and Patrice who hosted!) who are encouraging, uplifting, and making the world a better place with non-toxic, healthy solutions to the stresses of daily life!
Instagram post 17861929501561631 This may be the worst quality photo I’ve ever posted, but I need to share an update on #NothingNewNovember! My sister got married this weekend and it was the absolute best....so much so that I was having too much fun to pick up my phone, and this is the best photo I have of my rehearsal dinner outfit (oh hey there, photo-bombing hubby! 👋). Idk about y’all, but I definitely used to be someone who would go out and buy a new outfit for just about every nice/fun occasion, like weddings, showers, birthday parties, etc. Obviously I did buy a bridesmaid dress (many months ago, not during #NothingNewNovember!), but I challenged myself to turn to my closet for the rehearsal dinner rather than going out and buying something new. I had actually never before put together this particular outfit combo, but the constraints of not shopping and a chilly outdoor rehearsal forced me to get creative and discover a new outfit in my closet that I absolutely loved! Both the cardigan and dress are pieces I bought years ago in my pre-ethical fashion days. (side note: I think it’s so important to continue to wear any fast fashion pieces you already have, even if you are now committed to NOT buying fast fashion. It would be so wasteful and bad for our earth to just throw it out!) The tights were given to me by a friend who had purchased the wrong size and couldn’t return, but didn’t want to just toss perfectly good tights in the trash (three cheers to her for being sustainably-minded!). The booties are consignment Toms I bought on Poshmark two years ago. I was so proud of myself for putting together something from my closet rather than buying new! A cute and sustainable outfit win for #NothingNewNovember and my sister’s wedding weekend!
👗
How is #NothingNewNovember going for y’all?
Instagram post 17914551148363095 It’s here!! I hope you’ll join me and @redressraleigh for #NothingNewNovember. Full participation guidelines below, but basically it’s pretty simple: Don’t buy any new clothes this month! Yes, that includes Black Friday! For those of y’all who hate shopping and Black Friday, that won’t be too hard; but for those of y’all like me who LOVE shopping and Black Friday deals, I hear ya honey. I said simple, not easy. 😉 The whole point of a challenge is that it’s supposed to be a challenge! This is supposed to help us grow and learn rather than continue to scratch the itch of MORE NEW CLOTHING that is killing our earth and creating humanitarian injustices!
👚
Challenge Guidelines: In order to participate and be eligible for a prize, followers must:
1. Post at least one photo of their commitment to the challenge on Instagram during November, 2019.
2. Tag @RedressRaleigh in that post.
3. Use the hashtag #NothingNewNovember on that post and any additional posts you make regarding the challenge.
👚
Challenge Winners: All followers who complete the above three steps will be entered into a raffle to be drawn at the end of the month. Raffle winners will receive a unique experience related to sustainable fashion (details to come during November).
👚
Who’s joining me?? 🙋🏻‍♀️🙋🏻‍♀️🙋🏻‍♀️

I guess you could say my table settings are truly Fairly Southern!
Instagram post 17857995280580094 Y’all, what a great week it has been! I spoke at @redressraleigh’s Who’s Who in sustainable fashion and textiles event two nights ago. So much fun getting to know and learn from other sustainably minded people in the Carolinas! Be sure to go check out the accounts of my fellow panelists: @durhamoriginals @700rivers @senzatempostyle
Instagram post 18088715089097553 Finally experienced reiki for the first time last week thanks to @yogawithpatrice! Such a cool experience! For those who aren’t familiar, reiki is a form of energy healing. My skin was tingly throughout the session and my normally racing mind relaxed and lived in the moment....I thought all of 5 minutes had passed when Patrice gently let me know that my 30 minute session had come to an end! I felt so calm and could have stayed on that table all evening. Be sure to reach out to Patrice if you are looking for an amazing reiki practitioner. Also, please join me in congratulating her for a studio window that is most definitely #plantgoals 🌱
