As I sat under post-vaccine observation along with As I sat under post-vaccine observation along with dozens of others in the gymnasium of a small town high school today, I looked around and felt so grateful.

Selfishly grateful that I hopefully won’t have to be sick with COVID.

Grateful for all of the sweet, Southern-accented volunteers running the clinic so that lives could be saved.

Grateful that everyone sitting around me, especially those with gray heads and canes, are one step closer to safety from a deadly virus.

Grateful for an opportunity to love my neighbor as myself and protect those around me who are especially vulnerable to COVID.

That’s the one thing I hope anyone reading this will consider. Choosing to get the COVID-19 vaccine (or any other vaccine) isn’t just a personal decision, it’s an opportunity to love your neighbor. I work daily with critically ill children, many of whom won’t be able to get the COVID vaccine (or most other vaccines) even once it’s approved for use with children. They can only be protected by other people choosing to get vaccinated.

The fear and anxiety of COVID have been real for so many over the last year, but especially for the families I work with. Many of them truly cannot leave the house because they know contracting COVID would be deadly for their child.

Today I’m grateful for the chance to help protect them, and I’m grateful to everyone else doing their part too!

Now...who wants to take bets on how long it will be before the second vaccine body aches hit? 😜

I’m mostly a city girl, but occasionally the tre I’m mostly a city girl, but occasionally the tree hugging, nature adoring side of me comes out full force. I was in charge of choosing the book for my book club this month, and I went with Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer. Y’all!! Most of us in book club are not necessarily plant people and were pleasantly surprised by just how much we enjoyed this book about Indigenous perspectives on the earth. The author is truly talented with her prose while sharing profound lessons from Indigenous culture about how to care for the environment. I’ve never read anything quite like it and highly recommend! Adding a link to my bio if you want to check it out yourself. Pro tip - the author reads the audiobook and has the most soothing voice ever. I really want to be friends with her IRL.

Anyone else read a great book lately?

Why so happy?? Well besides the fact that it’s S Why so happy?? Well besides the fact that it’s SPRING and will be 80 degrees tomorrow in Raleigh (🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽), I just booked my first flight in a veryyyy long time!!! Between my second vaccine appointment and this trip, my calendar is looking 😎.

Okay, so now I need some help. For those of you who spend lots of time in masks, please give me your recommendations for the most comfortable + secure mask I should buy for my flight! I have a v. heavy duty mask, but I can only wear it for an hour before my ears start crying out for help. And my more comfortable masks really are more fashion than protection - I need something snug and effective for rolling through the germfest airport. Suggestions??

Remembering these sweet angels on National Puppy D Remembering these sweet angels on National Puppy Day. Annabelle, one of the two who stayed with our family, crossed the rainbow bridge last week at age 13. We know her brother and mama were waiting for her with a long stick they could all grab onto and play tug of war with. What I wouldn’t give to be buried under this pile of puppies again!

Sending so much love to anyone else missing a furry pal today! 💙🐶

Spent my birthday week in paradise with bae and th Spent my birthday week in paradise with bae and the wild ponies of the OBX! I know for many people paradise = palm trees and crystal clear water. For me, it’s the Carolina coast. I love traveling and have been fortunate to visit some incredible places, but nothing will ever have my heart like the beaches I grew up on.

I’ve spent a lot of time at the beach but have never been to see the wild horses in the Outer Banks. Bucket list item checked off! We stayed in a house with no roads leading to it....just some flooded out paths through the sand dunes. Ya girl got pretty good at 4 wheelin it in a jeep! It was beautiful to stay in a place so close to home yet still so wild. 🐴

Feeling extra grateful today to live in the South!

No longer 30; still very much flirty and thriving. No longer 30; still very much flirty and thriving. 🎉

Y’all know I’m too wordy to leave it at that so here’s the longer caption:

Several years ago, I NEVER would have posted this picture. I felt some kind of way about posting any photo of myself, much less in a swimsuit! I was worried posting pics of myself was too conceited or self-absorbed. I thought my body should always be minimized rather than shown to others. Not to mention, my critical eye found flaws with nearly every part of my body.

It wasn’t until I started Fairly Southern and noticed that photos of me (vs other people or objects) got more engagement from y’all that I started begrudgingly posting more of my own face on social media. Through practice, I gradually eased my way into feeling more and more comfortable sharing photos of myself.

Through this process, I realized how much sexist and patriarchal 💩 I had internalized about myself and my body. Especially growing up in the Bible Belt, I had sooo much internalized shame about my female body. (To be clear: I do NOT believe God shames our bodies or wants us to hide them...that’s something that comes from Christian culture.)

Now here I am on my 31st birthday, the oldest I’ve ever been, the heaviest I’ve ever been, with the most sunspots and varicose veins and cellulite and wrinkles I’ve ever had, and I can say 100% truthfully that I have never loved my body more, been this confident in my body, and felt this right about posting my own picture. I take care of my body in ways that make me feel good, healthy, and strong. She helps me enjoy life and has gotten me through really tough times. Why would I hide her or feel bad about liking her enough to show her off from time to time?

I can’t pretend I still don’t deal with shame or that I always love every part of my body because I AM HUMAN Y’ALL. But I am proud of how far I’ve come. Today I celebrate that I now gladly post pics like this of myself not because I feel like I need to for engagement, but because I ENJOY seeing and celebrating myself, and I no longer falsely believe that’s a bad thing!

Hbd to me!! 🎉🎉

In honor of my 31st birthday this week, I gift y’all this gem from my 21st birthday. Yes, I went on a spring break cruise for my 21st. Yes, I wore a weirdly camo printed, ruffled strapless dress. Yes, that is a plugged in straightener on the bed (what’s a fire hazard?). And yes, I’m pretty sure this was at the END of the night. Cheers! Can’t believe this was almost TEN years ago 🤯🤯

Quick little sustainability tip as we head into th Quick little sustainability tip as we head into the weekend: Don’t toss your medication bottles in the recycling bin!!

I’ve got a bag full of these (no shame in my Lexapro game 😉) to take to our dog rescue group today. They use them to distribute meds and monthly preventatives to fosters!

There’s a reason the words “reduce, reuse, recycle” are listed in that order. Recycling should be your last resort, not your go-to solution! Reducing and reusing are so much better for the earth. Before tossing in the bin, think about whether you can reuse that item, or do a quick Google search to see if there is an organization that can.

A quick little search reveals lots of other organizations, such as healthcare nonprofits distributing medication in underserved areas, that can use your pill bottles and other no longer needed items!

What are you saving from your recycling bin by reusing?
